Somebody told me that if you chew strong tasting gum when you want a cigarette instead of smoking that it will help you quit but slowly quit is that true?

No. You cannot slowly quit, it just wouldn’t work.
There are a number of organisations who will help you give up smoking, some are free. You then get all the help and support you need.
If you don’t want to do that, you can speak with your doctor.
