Before you start screaming, think about it.
£1.5 billion in health care for smokers and smoking related deseaes, OK, but how much do they make in tax on tobacco products.
It is a known fact that a packet of 20 fags can be sold for less than £1 and the manufacturers still make a profit.

No they dont! but they want to look good in the eye’s of the non-smokers who think its disgusting? yet because they dont smoke they can afford the bigger gas guzzling cars for which polute the atmosphere more than the old ciggy’s do then rant that smokers are causing us all alot of expense? tell them tw@s to sell thier cars a buy a hybrid? see how they feel then?
I don’t think they really care, because they make more than that in taxes.

In addition to the prohibitive duty on cigarettes, smokers’ premature deaths save pension costs and leave this group net contributors to the economy.
Although I do not like the smell of cigarette smoke, if everyone quit, the tax burden would have to be spread among the population as a whole.

I don’t smoke anymore. I quit 10.5 years ago when smokes went up to $10 a packet of 50. And I smoked 50 to 75 a day.

We are no longer allowed to smoke in restaurants, public toilets, pubs, clubs etc.
You can not smoke within 10 metres of a doorway to a building.
You get fined $100 for dropping a dead butt on the ground.
And a fine of $200 for dropping a lit smoke butt.
They have put extremely graphic photos, not pictures, on every smoke product. Not just the verbal warnings.
Those who do still smoke are shoved away behind a wall and shrubs, well away from anybody else.
Of course they don’t. Don’t know if you people heard of the time that the big Exec of Phillip Morris, at that time, made the comment how smokers SAVED them money. Sure you lose that money in health care when they are ALIVE, but you save all that money since they die younger. You don’t have the higher costs for health care when they are old and you don’t have the costs from things like Pension and that.
Simple thing is they look good by CLAIMING they won’t people to stop for health reasons. Then they make all the money on the taxes and fines and everything else they get from smokers. Heck they pretty much would go just short of handing out smokes to get the person to start. They make all that money off smokers, close to what you end up losing in the Health care costs, and then hit then going by the money you don’t lose.

The government’s hypocrisy on smoking has been around a long time. When I was in the AF, I was in charge of our installation health promotion program. I learned that our head office tried to put up little signs on the cigarette shelves that said things like, "Have you considered quitting?" They got official permission from the general in charge of all military stores to do this. Those signs barely lasted a month and the poor general almost lost his job over those silly little signs because the cigarette lobbies went to Congress and complained! This was back in the ’80s and things haven’t change much since.
I smoke and no the government does not want me to quit. I buy top tier and never on sale like Marlboro or Camel. $54 a carton and most of it is tax and some of it is to pay off the lawsuits.
I don’t see them taxing alcohol that way. Rehab centers, drunk driving, drunk fatalities, bar fights, etc. How much is that costing?
How much is it costing in health care for the obese? I don’t see the donuts getting a fat tax?

where else would the government get that kind of money coming in from if it wasnt for people buying fags. they make an absolute fortune from smokers and if we all stopped what would they do to bring in the money?.
They do not really want people to stop, though if we did you can guarantee everything else would increase to keep the money coming in through taxes.
they don’t really care about taxes on tabbacco they are concerned about peoples health they want these citzens to live long and happy lives. also if everyone quit smoking people who don’t smoke won’t have to suffer though being around heavy smokers and dreading the smell and than once they leave that person everywere they smell like smoke. it makes our world smell gross and it is part of the governments job to keep the cities nice and clean do you know how much trouble it would cause people if smoking were to continue? please quit and don’t make anyone else suffer
no they don’t because of the amount of money they earn off taxing us on them. our government suxs. you get taxed on everything more than once,just so that they can jet off on nice holidays,have ridiculous bloody bonuses and all there big posh fancy dinner party’s,and lets not forget the fact that you don’t see a government official in a reliant robin do you!!! more like Bentley’s and other posh bloody cars. they look after the rich and don’t give a crap about the poor,god do i sound old,lol

Of course the country doesn’t want people to quit smoking. The money this government makes from people smoking is astronomical. People get sick, doctors are involved, need meds, pharmaceutical companies involved, and lets not forget the cost of cigs.and the tax. There is a cure for cancer out there some where but just thing if they could cure everyone of cancer, all the monies that would stop. If the government wanted us to stop smoking cigs would be illegal. Just like they don’t want us to stop drinking. They don’t want us to stop smoking pot. Do you know how much money in this country is pot money or just plain drug money. This so called war on drugs, supposedly the government has been fighting for 20 + years is ridiculous. You can still find any drug you want any place you live. I believe if they wanted to stop the drug traffic from coming into this country they could, but they don’t. WHY? MONEY!!!! Plain and simple. The Almighty dollar.

my work has a no smoking policy, it is a call centre in a suburb out from the city that is isolated from shops and civilisation lol
well, not within walking distance anyway
people are only allowed to smoke on their one half hour allocated time meaning that we chain smoke for like 20 mins and then try and wolf some food down… not healthy
also, we only have one spot where we are allowed to smoke, what looks like an old public toilet turned shed with no shelter for when it rains and the outline of the "smoking area" is clearly described by the bright blue line painted right around and the words NO SMOKING BEYOND LINE
to top it off there is a severe shortage of seats in the tiny square, fair enough because you can barely fit 10 people in the box let alone them sitting down, and on the walls of the ex-toilet are huge graphic pictures of smokers lungs and brains
for a call centre that holds 2000 plus people i dont think thats really quite fair hey? the government doesnt want us to stop smokin, they get too much out of it but they dont mind making us feel like the sum of the earth while they’re rippin us off so blatantly

No, it brings far too much money into the country. The only reason they started these stop smoking campaign was because people were suing the cigarette companies as they had not been told about the health affects of smoking (or so they claim, stupid people).
