How can I help a friend quit smoking?

help me to stop smoking! stop smoking medications, stop smoking help, stop smoking plans and more

My best friend has been smoking about a month, and wants to quit, but is already pretty addicted – he is stressed a lot, and took up the habit to help ease the stress. I don’t live close to him, but can anyone give me ideas on how to help someone quit smoking?

I have emailed him the risks of smoking, and things like that, but wish I could do more.

I know exactly how you feel, I was in a very similar situation. I remember that I was so nervous at that time and I took it out on everyone around me. I didnt know what could I do until, thanks god, I found Smoke Deter. Now I can look back and laugh on myself and in the same time I remember how helpless I was. I hope that I'll never be in the same situation again

Like the first poster said, its very difficult to quit smoking, even if he’s only been doing it for a month. You can give him the link to this website: http://www.quitnet.com
The website was helpful for me when I was quitting because it lets you set a quit date, track your progress, etc. It also has a lot of helpful tips for when you’re quitting and tells you what to expect.

If your friend wants to quit, it will be a lot easier. However, if he’s not ready to yet, then I’m afraid the facts you’re sending him are probably going in one ear and out the other. I know when I was smoking, the addiction was stronger than the reasons against smoking.

You’re a good friend for caring about him though and I wish both of you good luck :)

It is really hard to get someone to stop smoking – it really needs to come from within – sometimes shock tactics work well when they see for themselves people who suffer the effects of long term smoking.

This link can give you some insight into things you may be able to show your friend or read to help you encourage him to stop. Good luck.

Well, your friend can replace smoking with something else, like chewing gum. Every time he feels the need to smoke replace it with chewing gum.

Keep in mind; quitting is different for each smoker. Ask your friend how you can be most helpful. This will show that you care and that you really want to help. Tell your friend that you think he can succeed this time—even if he has tried to quit before and failed. (In fact, most smokers have to “practice” quitting a few times before they quit for good.)

For the first few days after the smoker quits, be ready to help. He may want to talk all the time, or he may just want extra help when a tough situation comes up, such as a coffee break, a party, or a crisis at home or at work. Offer to call or visit to check on how he is doing. Ask how he’s feeling, not just whether or not he is still off cigarettes. No nagging, scolding, or preaching—these just don’t work. Instead, let him know how much you admire him for trying to quit.

Give lots of praise and offer rewards for getting through a day, a week, or a month without smoking. Rewards can be simple—flowers, a lunch treat, doing a chore around the house or office that your friend often does. Suggest doing things together, such as eating in the nonsmoking area of a lunchroom or restaurant, going to a movie, or taking a walk.

Your friend may not feel that he wants to quit. Cigarettes have been a steady friend for a long time. These feelings are normal even in smokers who succeed. Let your friend know you understand his doubts.
