If someone with COPD and CHF has constant relux, what does it mean?

Family member has both COPD and CHF, and for couple of months now has had increased reflux the minute she puts head down on pillow. It’s not necessarily acid, but it’s like most liquid of what ever it’s eaten just goes up, sometimes accompanied by tiny pieces of food. We avoid for her going straight to sleep right after dinner, afraid fluids may go to lungs, but seldom does she want to wait half hour before going to sleep or at least lying down.

She’s been only treated for those two diseases but I recall reading about her abdominal aorta in the medical records we got from hospital after one of her stays. Her home visiting doctor got a copy as well_aside from the one he got from us_and unfortunately mine has been put away in boxes and would take a while before I find it. I never asked any of her doctors about it, since they did not talk about it either. I’m planning on asking about it and letting them know about this reflux on Monday. Is it customary in people with her condition?

I know exactly how you feel, I was in a very similar situation. I remember that I was so nervous at that time and I took it out on everyone around me. I didnt know what could I do until, thanks god, I found Smoke Deter. Now I can look back and laugh on myself and in the same time I remember how helpless I was. I hope that I'll never be in the same situation again

Sounds like maybe Gerd. Definantly ask, if it is aspiration ( inhalation of the reflux fluid or particles) can lead to pneumonia, causing condition to worsen. Make sure she does not lay flat, many COPD patients are more comfortable sleeping in an upright position/ at an angle. Speach therapist, Ent doc and pulmonary are good to diagnos this

Some people get acid reflux from the food they eat. Not necessarily is it because she has COPD or CHF. CHF is from the fluid overload in the lungs and the COPD is also lung disease usually from smoking. Check with the doctor about her abdominal aorta…it’s called AAA(Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm . If she has this it could be serious and someone should have shared this with you. Aneurysms can bleed and can cause death. And it could just be ulcers. There are test that can be done to tell. In the meantime try propping her up with pillows when she sleeps..it keeps any fluid from "suffocating" her. It will help with her CHF. Most CHF and COPD pt’s end up sleeping in chairs when the disease worsens. Good luck to you and get her to the Doc soon.

I HAVE COPD, AND HAD PROBLEMS WITH MY STOMACHE BUT NOT ANY MORE. I ALSO HAD PAIN EVERY PLACE IN MY BODY. MY NEW DOCTOR RAN A BLOOD TEST AND FOUND OUT THAT I HAD A TYPE OF YEAST INFECTION THAT WAS THROGUH OUT MY WHOLE BODY EVEN MY LUNGS, EXCEPT WHERE WOMEN USAULLY GET YEAST INFECTIONS. THEY GAVE ME 20 DAYS OF STRONG ANTIBIOUTICS AND IT’S GONE. BEST I HAVE FELT IN TEN YEARS. THE ONE THING THAT DOES BOTHER MY COPD THE MOST IS WALKING BECAUSE IT MAKES MY HEART AND LUNGS WORK HARDER, AND REALLY GIVES ME SHORTNESS OF BREATH. MY DOCTOR REQUESTED THAT I NEEDED AN ELECTRIC WHEEL CHAIR. SO I CALLED THE SCOOTER STORE AND THEY SET EVERY THING UP. BECAUSE I HAVE MEDICARE AND MEDICAID I PAID NOTHING AND NOW I CAN GO ANY PLACE AND DO THINGS FOR MY SELF WHICH IS GREAT. SINCE SITTING AND TALKING IS THE BEST THING I CAN DO, I STARTED VOLUNTEERING AT MY LOCAL HOSPITAL. MY JOB IS TO CHEER PEOPLE UP THAT ARE RECOOPERATING FROM A PAST SURGERY. THIS VOLUNTEERING JOB HAS CHANGED MY LIFE COMPLETELY. NOT ONLY AM I HELPING OTHERS BUT THEY ARE REALLY HELPING ME. I HAVE A LOT OF GREAT NEW FRIENDS AND NEW FRIENDS THAT CARE ABOUT ME. UP UNTIL 7 YEARS AGO I WAS ON MY DEATH BED. THE DOCTORS HAD ONLY GIVEN ME UP TOO 3 YEARS TO LIVE BECAUSE MY LUNGS WERE SO BAD, AND I HAD GIVEN UP, BUT LOOK AT ME NOW 7 SEVEN LATER, I FEEL BETTER THAN I HAVE IN PROBABLY 20 YEARS. I STOPPED DATING 10 YEARS AGO, AFTER VOLUNTEERING WHEN I’M NOT VOLUNTEERING I’M GOING OUT SOMEWHERE WITH ONE OR TWO OF MY NEW FOUND FRIENDS. I LOVE IT. I’VE NEVER BEEN MORE COMPLETE AND I’M GOING ON 60 YRS YOUNG.
