Is smoking a cigar better or worse than a cigarette?

help me to stop smoking! stop smoking medications, stop smoking help, stop smoking plans and more

I hear tell that when you smoke a cigar you don’t inhale the smoke into your lungs, just your mouth, therefore would I be right in thinking this makes them ‘healthier’ (comparatively) than cigarettes?
Your concern is touching everyone, but I only smoke occassionally and really can and do stop whenever I feel like it. I thought I might try a cigar or two to see what the fuss is about :)

I know exactly how you feel, I was in a very similar situation. I remember that I was so nervous at that time and I took it out on everyone around me. I didnt know what could I do until, thanks god, I found Smoke Deter. Now I can look back and laugh on myself and in the same time I remember how helpless I was. I hope that I'll never be in the same situation again

Perhaps a cigar might be better for you but hey, the stink is ten times worse for the people around you.

Wouldn’t it be even healthier to give up the dreaded fags? My daughter’s father in law is still in hospital after having 2/3 of his tongue removed due to tongue cancer – caused by smoking cigarettes and cigars. Why risk it when you don’t have to?

  2. someGuyAnswersYourQuestion says:

Cigars are worse – no filter.

  3. Paint♥Pastel♥Princess says:

    Cigars are worse..

  4. Due 12/17/08! Woo-Hoo says:

Not healthier, you can still get mouth cancer.

  5. 90210 says:

    worse.

  6. Paul S says:

id say there better cos they say you don’t take cigars back thus less lung pollution?

  7. actxsingxdance510 says:

It don’t matter, they’ll both kill you in the end.

  8. Avarice. says:

Worse if you don’t smoke cigerettes.

  9. i ♥ u matt says:

    there both bad

  10. jhsm85 says:

cigars are better, you don’t inhale, meaning they will only harm you mouth, not your lungs.

  11. Havenshill says:

I’d agree to cigars being worse because of the bigger size and lack of filter

  12. Coolcat says:

both are terrible for your body. They both have a ot of tar, nicotein and other bad things in them.

  13. lbhietala says:

A cigar contains much more tar and nicotine than a cigarette, and is usually much larger, but you hold the smoke in your mouth; most people don’t inhale the smoke into their lungs.

It’s about the same as for how much poison actually goes into you.

Why would you want to take some of your hard-earned money, trade it for some nasty dried-up weed, and set that on fire?

  14. April H says:

not really even if your not inhaling. it can cause mouth cancer, ive seen it before and his wife smoked cigs the same amount of time and nothing, each person is different though, but if your worried about it then just quit and good luck

  15. dbag021 says:

They are only healthier in that your lungs are at lesser risk.

They are still the same in terms of addiction, mouth cancer, and dental effects.

  16. Rachie says:

both bad, like tobacco is BAD for health. If u think smoking makes u sexy, you’re definitely WRONG.

  17. DARREN A says:

I thought that comparatively they were less bad for you.You don’t inhale like with cigarettes and they also don’t contain as many chemicals as cigarettes.

  18. dhiadhuit says:

Well if all you are basing it on is what you heard, then it could be presumed that they’re "healthier" simply because you don’t take the smoke into your lungs. But it still seems like the idea of someone who plays with fire. No matter what, you’re going to get burned. The odds are still stacked too much against you. So I’ll still consider them worse.

  19. billicopter says:

    wtf?

if you breathe in then you inhale it.

cigars dont have filters also. not that they do anything anyway…

  20. Johnny says:

    Cigars are worse; why?
    - No Filter
    - More smoke
    - They last a lot longer than a cigarette

As others have said, they may make it more likely that you’ll get mouth or tongue cancer. But also be aware… it’s not just the mouth and lungs that are at risk; anything that the smoke can touch directly or indirectly is at risk.

Also smoking cigars and cigarettes are just about equal when you look at the risk of hypertension. So if cancer doesn’t kill you, heard disease might.

  21. markryan087 says:

    alot worse u could die

  22. clumsyone says:

Actually, scientifically speaking, the cigar is worse than the cigarette as 1 cigar equals 5 cigarettes, so it’s worse because 1 cigar damages your lungs 5 times more than 1 cigarette.
But if you want to talk what’s happening actually, you are smoking 1 cigar during more than 3 days, as cigars are expensive, so if you’re not a mafia guy nor a rich person, 1 cigar lasts much longer than a cigarette. So smoking 1 cigar during 2 or 3 days would be better than smoking 4 cigarettes per day.
But the best would be not to smoke at all, saving your breath 4 something better, and saving girls’ rejections caused by bad mouth smell and yellow teeth

  23. Alicia says:

cigars are worse its like 10 cigarettes in one. you typically puff it you don’t inhale people can tend to get cancer in thoes areas of the mouth because of it.

  24. chrhods says:

Well both are phallic symbols that can be detrimental to your health, why not read a nice book instead?

  25. Dr Frank says:

In the 60s when the American Surgeon General’s publication of information, first suggested officially that smoking was harmful, it was noted that cigar and pipe smokers were less affected than cigarette smokers. This prompted many smokers to change the form of their poison. Unfortunately it soon became evident that whilst pipe and cigar smokers who had never smoked cigarettes, although still likely to develop COPD, emphysema, lung cancer and heart disease, did so at a somewhat lesser but still very significant degree to cigarette smokers, those who switched to pipe or cigars from cigarettes, maintained levels of risks equivalent to those who just continued to smoke cigarettes.

In addition pipe smokers also have a higher incidence of mouth cancers than cigarette smokers.

The answer is of course smoking anything is bad news! Incidentally cannabis produces a 6 fold risk of lung cancer compared to cigarette smokers!

  26. Herfnerd says:

I just love when ignorant people comment on something they have no knowledge of.

    You DON’T inhale cigars.

Yes, there is a risk of oral cancer, but no one ever said that smoking cigars/pipes is safe.

  27. Mohamed4Jesus says:

Smoking is wrong whatever you smoke

  28. Heidi H says:

Cigars are worse, but they still taste better. Most people don’t smoke cigars as much as cigs anyway

  29. dave says:

i dunno about you limeys but here in canada cigars are wayyy better for you as htey are untreated with the chemical constituants that cigarettes have. they dont need filters. granted there are risks in smoking either, but cigars are better than cigarettes…remember george burns, he smoked giant stogies till he died at 100!

  30. dave says:

i think that if anything i have problems with the zooley assed blunts i smoke, they make me sleepy and hungry, but over here we dont get that street corner shizat that you guys get, we only get the bomb son, mad spliffs and cigars are good for your psychology if nothing else lol

  31. IDIOTS says:

If your a dumb cigar smoker and inhale then sure it will be bad. My great grand dad ,grandpa and dad all smoke cigars , great grand dad lived to be 92, My grandpa is still alive at 77 and dad is still alive and well with no health issues at all. That should be enough information for you to learn how to smoke a good cigar . A true cigar smoker dont smoke one after another or even rarly more then one a day. Any good cigar will cost between 3.00 and 25.00 a piece . So learn your facts.
By far cigar smokers there doing will go on much longer then and other kind of smoker. word.

  32. Knox Worrell says:

Ok, there are some real ignorant people on here.

Let me set the record straight, Cigars are not necessarily better or worse than Cigarettes, it’s still a matter of dispute. However, Cigars do NOT have alot of the chemicals that cigarettes do, just the natural amount of Tar and Niccotine that is in Tobacco, whereas Cigarettes have minimal amounts of chemicals artificially placed in them to extend the Cigarette’s age length, mantain the appearance, etc. Also, to correctly smoke a cigar, you should NOT inhale the smoke as you would with a cigarette. If you inhale a cigar incorrectly you will start to become severly light-headed and may even puke because the niccotine will upset your stomach.

But, Cigars also have much more niccotine than a Cigarette (there may be an exception but i’m not aware of one). Smoking cigars could build a niccotine addiction more quickly than cigarettes.
