Well I'm not a Dr, but I've had asthma all my life and I've never needed to spit! When I exercise I CAN'T breathe deep or long, my breathing just stops. It may be something temporary like a chest infection or maybe a sinus problem/cold. When you have a build up of mucus you get bunged up and may need to cough up/spit phlegm, and it may hurt your chest. If you're worried, visit your Dr and ask. They'll listen to your chest and have you take a peak-flow (blowing into a tube that measures the strength of your exhalation) and let you know if it's likely to be asthma. Asthma is mostly very easily managed these days, so don't stress.

If you feel like your lungs have had elastic bands wrapped around them then yes, you probably have a type of asthma. I recommend a visit to the doctor - if it is only asthma you can get simple help but it may be something more serious and you should get checked out.

This doesn't necessarily mean you have any respiratory conditions at all although you should get yourself checked out by a doctor. You need to take into consideration things like, do you smoke and are you fit. If you have only just recently started exercising then the most likely cause is that you are unfit. Weight may also factor although this isn't the only reason. This exact same thing happens to me because I'm in the same condition. If tests come back from the docs that you don't have any conditions then continue with your exercise regime and you will notice a marked improvement with your breathing as you get fitter.
