If you go to the doctor they will no doubt prescribe Chantix. I have heard so many horror stories about this medication that I can not believe that people would even suggest it as an option.

Check out this link for some such horror stories

Chantix has many side effects, as the people who answered you have testified. These include nausea (30%), sleep problems (insomnia, nightmares, strange & vivid dreams), constipation, gas and vomiting.

Smoking is more of a psychological addiction than a physical one. If you really want to quit you must discover the reasons why you smoke and then eliminate or change these thought processes. Once you deal with the psychological side of smoking it makes the quitting process easy, no matter your level of addiction.

Most companies who sell quit smoking aids admit to this on their websites. They say to use their products in conjunction with a psychological support program. Why? Because without one the chances of quitting are greatly reduced. In reality the psychological program does most of the work. The quit smoking aids are more of a helping hand and are often unnecessary.

Chantix is far and away the most effective. If you have bad side effects, you can take Wellbutrin. Look into combination therapy -- Wellbutrin plus nicotine replacement. Commit lozenges are better than the patches and gum, by the way.

If you're reading up on chantix (US trade name, champix in europe I think) then you'll want to have a look at these:

Lawsuits link stop-smoking drug to suicides: http://www.lawyersusaonline.com/index.cfm/archive/view/id/431683

FAA bans anti-smoking drug Chantix for pilots, air controllers: http://articles.latimes.com/2008/may/22/nation/na-smokedrug22

FDA to review Champix/Chantix side effects: http://www.news-medical.net/?id=33001

Wellbutrin (marketed as Zyban in the UK) does a little better...

But see here: http://www.antidepressants-doc.com/Wellbutrin.html for a list of the side effects. There is also the drawback that the success rate is woefully small http://ebm.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/9/1/15

My advice would be not to go down the pharmaceutical route and to go for something like this http://www.allencarrseasywaytostopsmoking.co.uk/index.asp?PageID=1

But when you do give up then please don't become one of those judgmental ex-smokers who make life miserable for those of us who still smoke.
